Should Obesity Be Considered a Disease?

Last month The American Medical Association (AMA) – the largest organization of physicians in the United States – formerly recognized obesity as a disease.  The AMA took this step to focus attention on this country’s obesity epidemic and advance obesity treatment and prevention. In doing so the AMA joins a number of leading organizations that have previously recommended this classification, including the National Institutes of Health, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and The Obesity Society.
